This event has been canceled by George Clinton.

Be sure to bring your notebooks, kids, because Dr. Funkenstein has a lot of wisdom to impart. And, yes, it’s all going to be covered on the final.

George Clinton didn’t invent funk. That distinction belongs to James Brown. But Clinton has spent a lifetime reinventing (time and again) Black America’s other greatest music form. As the leader and enduring center of gravity of the sprawling collective of unparalleled virtuosity and inventiveness known variously as Parliament, Funkadelic, and P-Funk, Clinton has been the avatar of funk for closing in on six decades. From Earth, Wind & Fire, to Rufus, through Rick James and Prince, and on to OutKast and Anderson .Paak, Clinton’s influence has been essential. At age eighty-four, Clinton has stories to tell and ideas to share on topics including Black music, Afrofuturism, and what really follows when you free your mind.

Bringing the conversation with Clinton to UMass is Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky.

A visionary in his own right, Miller is known for his innovative work in electronic music forms including trip hop and illbient. Miller is also known as a multimedia artist, author, and public intellectual. He’s perfectly positioned to drive a fascinating speaking program with his friend, Clinton. And to put the cherry on top of the evening, Miller will deliver a special DJ set sure to tear the roof off Bowker Auditorium.

George Clinton in Conversation with Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky is part of the Fine Arts Center's Codemakers series.
