“A genuinely theatrical experience, delivered with balletic grace and infectious humour.”
— The Times of London
Our spring programming opens with a literal bang! And a spectacle! Both courtesy of the remarkable Yamato, an ensemble that has been a leading force in Japanese taiko drumming for more than three decades. From their home base in Asuka-mura, Nara Prefecture, Yamato have toured the world, bringing their high-energy, athletic, graceful performance style to audiences in fifty-four countries through more than 4,700 engagements.
Yamato’s performances incorporate more than forty taiko drums, ranging from the massive, stage dominating odaiko, an instrument nearly six feet in diameter and weighing more than 1,100 pounds, down to the hand-held shime-daiko. Members of the group undergo rigorous training and conditioning that enable them to meet the demands of a modern artform rooted in centuries-old tradition and characterized by fluid movement from relative calm through explosive flourish. The ensemble brings style, discipline, energy, and humor that will keep every member of your family engaged from start to finish.
