Performance–Mine Eyes, Justin Randolph Thompson

Join us for Mine Eyes, a film and live sound performance by artist Justin Randolph Thompson and acclaimed saxophonist and composer James Brandon Lewis. Bringing together moving image, sound, and archival materials, Mine Eyes reflects on the intellectual, artistic, and geological legacy of Randolph W. Bromery.

Following the performance, Lewis and Thompson will revisit UMass’s landmark 1973 Black Musicians Conference, a pivotal moment when jazz musicians gathered as organizers, theorists, and architects of their own futures. Their dialogue will consider music as an artistic, political, and economic practice while honoring Randolph W. Bromery's transformative legacy and envisioning new possibilities for the future.

This event is coordinated and hosted in collaboration with the Studio Art Department. The event is a public program of the exhibition Surveying Gravity: A Mirror for Growing Contradictions, on view at the Augusta Savage Gallery September 10–25. The exhibition and its public programs are supported by the Creative Capital Foundation.
